Google is unquestionably one of the leading tech companies when it comes to keeping its service online under increasingly heavy traffic. There is no greater example of this than YouTube, which is constantly being used to upload and playback video around the world.
The extent to which Google’s content and traffic is growing has reached an all time high this week. YouTube now streams more than 4 billion videos every day. Video uploads have reached 60 hours every minute, or one hour of new video every second of the day.
That’s a massive increase since the last time streaming and upload figures were released. In May of last year YouTube reported 3 billion views per day and 48 hours of video uploads every minute. In just 8 months that’s a 25% increase in views, and 20% increase in uploads, and there are no signs of that usage slowing down.
It’s hard to comprehend that much video being uploaded and offered, let alone the infrastructure Google has in place to cope with such demand. Of all its services, YouTube has to be one of, if not the most expensive service to run. Hence the need to continue to find new revenue streams that can be taken advantage of while all that video streams to users.
According to Google, it only makes money from around 3 billion YouTube videos every week, which is less than a day’s worth of those served. That’s sure to change, but hopefully in a way that does not infuriate users with adverts popping up more prominently in front of or during video playback.
