Untethered jailbreak for second gen Apple TVs updated, puts XBMC next to HBO Go

The folks at Firecore are working on more than just the latest version of their Infuse media player, and just delivered an updated software package for jailbreaking second generation Apple TVs (the current third gen model has, so far, remained closed). Showing once again that jailbreaks aren't just for the iPhone and iPad, the new version of Seas0npass provides an untethered -- read: it still works after a reboot -- method for Apple TV players running the 5.3 software update that added access to channels like HBO Go and WatchESPN. That's still a step away from the most recent Apple TV 6.0 update that arrived this fall with iTunes Radio and AirPlay from iCloud features, but the team says it's made "some encouraging progress" there. The combination of Seas0npass and aTV Flash (black) lets your hockey puck play a number of new video/audio formats and run home theater software like Plex and XBMC, check out the site for instructions.

Evasi0n Jailbreak Group Drops Pirate App Store TaiG

In a short letter to the jailbreak community, the Evasi0n group has announced they are refusing to distribute TaiG, a Chinese app store released alongside an iOS 7.x jailbreak. Users found that the app store contained hundreds of pirated apps.

Evasi0n said they “dropped the ball” and that the TaiG partnership was a mistake.

We terminated our relationship with them. We are very disappointed that they have decided to put up a cracked version of the jailbreak on their site that installs Taig. We did not give them any permission or source code.

They also reverse-engineered the software to assess how TaiG handled user privacy, finding that the software sent no private data and that the software sent unique identifiers in encrypted form. Noted home-brew app developer Jay Freeman confirmed that Evasi0n was to receive at least $1 million from TaiG, although the actual sum was not disclosed.

The group has also announced that they are not accepting cash from TaiG:

There have been a lot of rumors listing various amounts we’ve been paid. We have received no monies from any group, including Taig. We will not be accepting any money. Our donations are being given to Public Knowledge, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure to help protect jailbreaking as your legal right.

iOS 7 Untethered Jailbreak Now Available

A team of iOS programmers called Evasi0n have jailbroken that latest iPhone/iPod/iPad operating system, iOS 7.0.4. Jailbreaking allows uses to install home-brew software and run unapproved apps from the Cydia software repository.

The jailbreak takes “5 minutes” and works on Windows and OS X. Users at 9to5mac have expressed dismay that this jailbreak came too early – many are worried it won’t work on the next few releases including the major 7.1 that they expect in coming months. Most are reporting that the jailbreak works seamlessly on devices that support iOS 7.x.

Interestingly, this release coincided with fears that the iOS 7 jailbreak had been secretly sold to a third party who would monetize it. Traditionally most jailbreaks have been free but even offering a jailbreak for a brief window on a paid site could be a very lucrative proposition. That is clearly no longer the case.

As with all jailbreaks please remember two words: be prepared. Backup your data and prepare to spend a few hours on a bricked phone if things don’t work correctly. The process has gotten much better over the past few years but there could be bugs. Also remember that this is a jailbreak, not a SIM unlock. This will not allow you to move from carrier to carrier, only install home-brew software.
