Chevrolet adds Beats Music streaming to its in-car system as Beats opens its API to developers

Beats Music is already integrated with Apple's CarPlay system, which means you'll be able to stream music from Beats' catalog in any vehicle that happens to have Apple's setup installed. Now, new API support could mean we'll be able to pump out the jams from even more cars. The streaming music service made its API public today, a move that gives third-party developers access to its vast music collection. In particular, developers get access to the company's library of tunes, album art and track metadata (Beats previously shared its API privately with a few big names like Sonos and Bop.fm). So far, Chevrolet has announced it's adding Beats to its AppShop system -- and we're sure it won't be the last company to do so.

Apple Adds New “Designing Great Apps” Micro Site For iOS 7 Developers

Apple has offered up a central location that houses a number of resources around designing software for iOS 7. The collection of videos, documents and whitepapers seems aimed at making it easier for developers to not only accommodate their existing designs for the new, pared down graphical look of iOS 7, but also to help them start thinking about how to push the envelope with the UI of their app to make sure an iOS 7 redesign isn’t just about a visual refresh, but something brand new with the potential to delight users.

The microsite leads with a selection of tutorial and explanatory videos culled from the iOS 7 Tech Talks series that Apple posted in December for developers, as well as some from its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) annual event last June. There are also key documents from the developer resource pool offered up, including the iOS Human Interface Guidelines, UI Design Dos and Dont’s, and the iOS 7 Transition Guide. A sidebar presents the iOS 7 introductory design video, Apple’s “Designed by Apple in California” spot, also from WWDC, and the developer “Making a difference. One app at a time” spot from the same event.

There’s no new material on the site, but it does pull together a key collection of resources in one spot that will help devs refine their products and fully embrace the changed visual language of Apple’s latest mobile OS. Even if you’re not a developer, it’s an interesting look at how Apple views iOS 7 app design, and what kinds of things it chooses to highlight in promoting that view to its third-party software partners.

BitSpin, Developers Of The Timely Alarm Clock For Android, Join Google

While details about the deal are quite sparse, it seems that Google has quietly acquired (acquihired?) Bitspin, the Zurich-based team behind the Android alarm clock Timely.

Best known for its design, Timely found a rather nice balance between beauty and simplicity. It’s flagship feature was its quick set alarm, which allowed users to schedule an alarm with just a single swipe or two. According to their Google Play stats this morning, Timely had received somewhere between 1 and 5 million downloads.

In what may be the shortest announcement ever, Bitspin announced the news by way of a three sentence post on their home page:

“We’re thrilled to announce that Bitspin is joining Google, where we’ll continue to do what we love: building great products that are delightful to use.

For new and existing users, Timely will continue to work as it always has. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded our app and provided feedback along the way; we truly appreciate all your support.”

Alas, there’s no word yet on the specific details of the deal, though we’ve got emails in asking for more. The good news, in the mean time: whether you’re already a Timely user or just finding out about it now, the app will continue to be offered for free.

Fleksy will let developers bake its keyboard into iOS apps

At long last, the default iOS keyboard is no longer your only option when it comes to text input on an iOS device. That is, if the app you're using has signed on to a new SDK released today by Syntellia's Fleksy, a predictive touch keyboard that exited its Android beta just last week. Fleksy actually debuted a standalone iOS app over a year ago as an option for those with visual impairments, which was recently updated to 2.0 to play nicer with iOS 7. Its new SDK, however, lets developers incorporate Fleksy as an alternate keyboard in any app, a first in iOS history. So far the only programs that have confirmed Fleksy as a keyboard option are Wordbox, GV Connect, Launch Center Pro and Blindsquare. Unfortunately, users are unable to install Fleksy on a deeper OS level, so you'll have to be on the lookout to see if any of your favorite apps get on the Fleksy bandwagon. While we wait for that to happen, iOS users can go on and try any of those aforementioned apps to finally get a feel for a freedom Android users have had for awhile now.
