"Big" Deal from Google Play: Download the Tom Hanks movie free for a limited time

Back when Tom Hanks was considered a rising comedic actor for his work on television's Bosom Buddies (along with Peter Scolari who is now playing Yogi Berra on Broadway), he had a starring role in "Big." This was a movie about a kid who wanted to be a grown-up but never considered the obligations involved. One of the most famous scenes from the movie is the one where Hanks and co-star Robert Loggia play Chopsticks and Heart and Soul on a foot operated electronic keyboard at an FAO Schwartz toy store.

For a limited time, Google is allowing Android users to download the movie for free. Just head over to the Google Play Store to do so. It's a delightful movie that will warm your heart and is definitely worth the storage space it will take up on your device.

No one could ever imagine back in 1988 that Tom Hanks would turn out to the be the "Great American Actor" that he matured into. And who would have thought that Google would be giving you a classic feature length film on the house? Better hurry though, because at some point the carriages turn back into pumpkins and you will have to purchase the movie again, instead of getting it for free.

Gamefly tries adding movie rentals to its disc-by-mail service

Netflix may have flinched at the prospect of maintaining its disc-by-mail service, but GameFly seems to be embracing it. On April 4th, the company will begin shipping DVD and Blu-ray discs to customers with a 2-game (or higher) GameFly subscription. The program is a test, Gamefly CEO Dave Hodess told VentureBeat, launched in the wake of subscriber pleas for film rentals. It's free for now -- piggybacking on the company's existing game distribution network -- but Hodess says that Gamefly will monitor the test and tweak the program as needed. While we don't know how large the company's film library is just yet, the beta presents an interesting alternative for folks who miss the duality of Blockbuster's defunct disc service. 0 Comments Share

Pieces might be falling into place for a Minecraft movie from Warner Bros.

Prepare thyselves, Minecrafters. Earlier today, Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to turn the indie phenomenon Minecraft "into a major motion picture." The popular franchise has apparently already drawn "huge interest" from writers and filmmakers, making it a hot property for Warner Bros. to add to its mighty portfolio. The studio giant is rumored to have chosen Roy Lee to take production charge of said Minecraft project; he recently produced The Lego Movie, which has been a complete hit at the box office.

Minecraft creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, isn't keeping quiet and recently tweeted about how he "wanted to be the leak," hinting that, perhaps, there is a movie in the works. Still, nothing's actually been confirmed yet -- but, as they say, where there's smoke, there's fire. Until then, maybe this documentary can control your high level of excitement.

Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” Gets A Movie Deal

In an era where movie creators simply copy books for lack of original ideas, Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In has been picked up for a movie deal.

According to the WSJ, Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the film rights to Ms. Sandberg’s book, which was published last year.

Sandberg’s book, which she penned to help women reach their full potential in today’s workplace, outlines all the reasons why females infrequently ascend to the top of the business world, and gives anecdotes and analysis to solve these underlying problems.

Oddly, Lean In has almost no narrative structure whatsoever, and rather offers analysis and advice. How that will turn into a riveting movie is beyond me.

This isn’t Sony’s first go-around with Facebook-themed content. The studio was responsible for 2010′s “The Social Network” which was a box office hit. That, like Lean In: The Movie, was based on a book, “The Accidental Billionaires.”

It is unclear how closely Sandberg will be working with the filmmakers on the script, but her co-writer Nell Scovell is already hard at work on a first draft of the script.

Though I’m not expecting to laugh and cry at the premiere of Lean In, there is a bit of good news out there for movie lovers in the tech space. If Lean In can be turned into a movie, there’s a really great chance that Bilton’s book, Hatching Twitter — about the origins of the shortwinded social network — will also find its way to the big screen.

Reason #152 Virtual Reality Is Awesome: Personal Movie Theaters Without The Awful Other People

I love going to the movie theater. Seriously, I love it.

I just hate all the other people that go.

Quite early on, my parents taught me that there was but one rule for going to the theater: silence is golden. If the theater was a moviegoer’s church, talking or otherwise ruining the experience for others was sin. If I talked, we’d leave. Simple as that.

Sometime in the past few years, though, it’s like people have forgotten how to do the movie theater.

I’ve tried going at different times. I’ve tried going to different theaters. No matter what I do, no matter where I go, the shitty moviegoers follow. They talk. They crack jokes that only their friends laugh at. They muck with their phones, blinding everyone in the rows behind them so they can blast out a Facebook update about being at the movies that literally no one will care about.

I went to 10 movies this year; 9 out of 10 had at least one person who happily paid their $12 just to go in and crap on the movie for everyone else. I’ve given up.

Rdio shutters Vdio movie streaming service, offers Amazon gift cards as compensation

Rdio was a bit late to the game when it announced its movie streaming service, Vdio, earlier this year. The spinoff site was available in beta form in the US, the UK and Canada, offering blockbuster flick rentals for $6 and movie purchases for up to 20 bucks. Rdio took Vdio offline today, however, citing an inability to differentiate its offering in a very crowded market. Customers who purchased movies and TV shows or have unwatched rentals will receive compensation in the form of Amazon gift cards, while promotional credit will expire.
