Samsungs Beam phones with built-in pico projectors never really caught on, but the company has another one in the works. The Samsung SM-G3858 builds on its predecessor while staying in the mid-range.

The phone was certified by Tenaa, which is where the info comes from. The next Beam features a 4.66 LCD with only WVGA resolution and is powered by a quad-core processor at 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM. It runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Unfortunately, theres no info on the projector itself but the bump is visible at the top of the device. You can also see the projector button above the Power key. Previous Beams used nHD projectors (640 x 360).

Additional specs include a 5MP / 1080p camera, 3G connectivity (including TD-SCDMA) and a microSD card slot. The new Galaxy Beam measures 134.5 x 70 x 11.7mm and weighs 165.5g.

The device bears the China Mobile logo on its back, but that doesnt preclude the possibility of an international version.

WhatsApp calling spotted in the wild?

Screenshots from iPhoneItalia suggest that this is the new iPhone interface for the future version of WhatsApp with voice calls.

(Credit:iPhoneItalia)

Answer the phone -- WhatsApp is calling.

Friday, screenshots purportedly depicting the widely popular messaging app's coming-soon voice-calling features made their way to the Web courtesy of the blog iPhoneItalia. The shots, seen above, reportedly depict a beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone with a new interface for making calls.

The images suggest that WhatsApp with VoIP is on its way sooner rather later. Just weeks ago, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum promised to give the messaging app's iPhone and Android users voice communication options. He said voice calling would be added in the second of quarter of this year.

"We think we have the best voice product out there," Koum said at the time. "We use the least amount of bandwidth and optimize the hell out of it."

WhatsApp, which is being acquired by Facebook for $19 billion, currently supports a variety of messaging options and lets people leave recorded voice messages for one another. The application has 465 million active users.

Voice calls will pit WhatsApp more directly against VoIP apps such as Skype and Viber. Though Facebook already offers voice calling via Messenger, WhatsApp is operated independently and used by international audiences who would benefit from the addition of free calls.

Samsung Galaxy Beam successor spotted in China (updated)

At Mobile World Congress in 2012, Samsung announced a pico projector smartphone known as the Galaxy Beam. Although it was a cool concept, the phone's downfall was its middling specs, aging OS and large chassis. Two years later, it appears that Samsung's working on a successor to the Beam called the SM-G3858, according to China's government database. The Tenaa entry even comes with a few pictures, most of which offer an indication of a projector: there's clearly a bump on the upper back which opens up to a wide lens on the top, and we also saw an extra button that models after the original Beam -- in fact, the icon above the button looks eerily like the one seen here. Curiously, Samsung has shed the sporty misshapen look in favor of a sleek metal build, which certainly seems a better fit for professionals.

The database also gives us a glimpse at its specs, some of which are an improvement over the original Beam; the China Mobile-branded phone reportedly packs a 4.66-inch WVGA (800x480) display, Android 4.2.2, a quad-core 1.2GHz chipset with 1GB of RAM, microSD slot with up to 32GB external storage, as well as TD-SCDMA and GSM connectivity (no LTE on this model, although there's a chance this is simply a 3G-only variant of a global model). It's also 11.6mm thick, which is much thicker than most Samsung smartphones but still is nearly a full millimeter thinner than the original. It's still too early to determine whether this is going to be exclusive to China Mobile or available to a global market, but at least we know the phone exists for now; Samsung, we're hopeful, will provide us with the rest of the story at some point down the road.

Update: The more we look at the images, the less likely it seems that the G3858 actually uses a metal exterior. Rather, we'd guess that it simply has a plastic back cover that just happens to feature a glossy brushed metal finish. 0 Comments Share
