Facebook Partners With Shutterstock To Offer Free Stock Images In Its Ad Creator

image002-1
When ads look bad, Facebook, users, and advertisers all lose. So Facebook today announced a partnership to bake Shutterstock into its ad creator, allowing marketers to select from millions of free stock images for their ads. Facebook today also started letting advertisers upload multiple images at a time to build ad variants for A/B testing. Both could make Facebook ads more interesting.
On the mobile side, Facebook updated its Pages Manager app to let admins edit who else controls their page, and publish multi-photo feed posts. Android Page Manager users can tag people in comments and browse a Page Feed of other relevant Pages, while the iOS app now allows for creation of new Pages and events.
So what’s the point of all these updates? To make marketing content on Facebook as interesting as possible so it’s not a turn off for users. No one wants to see bland ads shoved in between fun photos from their friends. Facebook has to make money, but it shouldn’t disrupt the user experience.

Google’s Street View Ups Its Panda Count, Adds 6 New Zoos

google-maps-icon
For quite a while now, Google has featured Street View imagery from zoos around the world. Today, the company decided to highlight some of these image collections on its new Views site and also added six new zoos to its lineup.
The new zoos that are now featured on Street View are theChengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding,Houston ZooZoo AtlantaBuin Zoo in Chile, Zoologico de Bauru in Brazil and the Zoo Safari Park Stukenbrock andTierpark Hagenbeck in Germany.
These join a number of other zoos the company recently added to Street View, including Sydney’s Taronga Zoo (which was the first location in Australia to be mapped with Google’s Street View trike), as well as zoos in Chicago, San Diego, Toronto, Singapore and Barcelona.
Today’s relatively small update comes after a flurry of activity earlier this year. In June, for example, Google added 1,000 Street View locations to its collection, ranking from sports stadiums and Chilean ski slopes to the canals of Copenhagen (and a few zoos, too). Google’s underwater Street View cameras also continue to bring new imagery to the service, and its back pack-like trekkerhas been everywhere from the Galápagos islands to the Eiffel Tower in recent months.

Google Update Adds More Entertainment And Travel Features To The Android Assistant App

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 11.59.35 AM
Google has added a half-dozen new travel and entertainment features to its personalised search app Google Now. With the additions, the company is aiming to capture the attention of the real-world consumer, such as a sports fan watching an NCAA football game, or the recently landed tourist trying to find their rental car.
Like Twitter, Google is drawing on a lot of evidence that indicates people are increasingly consuming entertainment — TV or otherwise — while tapping away on mobile devices to get more information and connect with other viewers. The new features include:
- New cards for car rentals, concert tickets, and commute sharing.
- Improved cards for public transit and TV, which now aurally identifies music and program information.
- The ability to set search reminders for new media releases, as well as receive real-time NCAA football scores.
Google Now pulls information from all of your Google services in a bid to provide relevant information depending on your time and location. So for travelers, the car rentals card, which complements the boarding pass and hotel reservation cards, directs them to the rental centre; the concert ticket card will bring up the ticket once the user arrives at the venue; and the commute-sharing card informs users’ loved ones that they have just left work and are heading home.
However, Google’s America-specific focus has irked users around the world.
On the company’s blog post announcing the features, international users have complained about the lack of local support from Google. ”Google now is very US centric. I wish Google concentrated more on providing local content on a global basis,” wrote Google+ user Kumarjit Sen.
The Google Now update is for Android 4.1+. There is no word on whether the iOS version, which has been largely neglected, will get the new features anytime soon.
