T-Mobile to offer the Samsung Galaxy S5 for no money down, pre-orders begin March 24th

Looks like the embargo is officially up on Samsung Galaxy S5 pricing. After AT&T revealed earlier today that it'll sell the new flagship phone for $200 on-contract, T-Mobile chimed in to say it will offer the device for no money down, with pre-orders beginning next week, on March 24th. Of course, anyone who knows anything about T-Mobile's UnCarrier pricing plans knows that doesn't mean "free" -- it means you're committing to 24 subsequent monthly payments. So, if you're already sweet on the GS5's Band-Aid-like stylings, and know you prefer T-Mo, you'll want to sign up first thing on Monday.

Introduction

Tablets may not be as prominent on this website as smartphones but we are equally passionate about both. And as much as we enjoy testing the latest gadgets in and out, we hope too that while doing that we help you make informed buying decisions. That's what these shopping guides are for.

It's been a while since this article was last updated and that's mainly down to the lack of much movement in the market since December. Keen as ever to not miss anything, we've been closely following all developments. So here's the latest edition of our tablet buying guide.

We cater to a quite diverse international audience, so most of the times we won't be mentioning specific prices but we're sure you'll know a deal when you see one. Our job would be to list what we think are the best tablets out there, so there should be a good enough bang for your buck whichever of these you go for.

We've broken down our tablet recommendations into three distinct categories: compact, midsize, and full-size. And since tablets generally come in both Wi-Fi-only and 3G/LTE-enabled variants, we've split each section accordingly. On each page the different options will be listed according to their price range - from affordable to ridiculous, each with their merits.

We get things started in the compact tablet category. Compacts are growing in popularity not only in casual living room environments, but also out in the open and even in corporate scenarios, thanks to their versatility and portability. This category also offers the cheapest way to get into tablets in the first place so we assume there would be a lot of first-time buyers here.

Moving on, midsize tablets are for people who want a bit more screen estate while still maintaining portability. What exactly constitutes a midsize tablet will be different for each individual user, and can be anywhere between 7.5"-9". We'll give you plenty of choice when it comes to finding the right combination of size, features, and price. This is the newest category of the three and it might as well attract new tablet users who have been so far unwilling to commit to either of the two extremes of the tablet range - the 7-inchers and the 10-inchers.

Finally, full-size tablets are those that touch or cross the 10" mark. This is where top manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, and Apple will duke it out for dominance. Some of these tablets are just a keyboard away from compact laptop territory, so be sure that this is the way you want to go when you consider your options.

For each section, we order our recommendations starting with the cheapest, most worthwhile tablets available from a reputable manufacturer. While so-called "whitebox" offerings from lesser-known makers are surging and account for a huge amount of tablet growth - particularly ones running Android - their affordable price is oftentimes the result of using low-cost components and they simply don't offer a reliable and consistent user experience (let alone regular software updates).

Above all, we value tablets with high-grade screens, robust performance, good build quality and rich connectivity options. We consider a poor screen to be a deal breaker and having wide viewing angles with no serious shift in colors and contrast is a must for a solid tablet user experience. Where possible, we would always pick a higher resolution screen as well.

We don't consider cameras to be important on tablets and if you are only going to view your photos on the tablet's screen, then a high resolution camera is hardly a must.

We like seeing tablets with card slots to cheaply top up the built-in storage but still we reckon 16GB is the minimum built-in memory you should consider. For modern day tablets without card slots, we always recommend getting the 32GB version, as a mere 16GB simply doesn't cut it anymore.

On the next page we get started with our compact tablet recommendations but you can jump right to what you're looking for using the links below:

The world's thinnest phone, Gionee Elife S5.5, hits the shelves March 18 for $374

If you have been jonesing to get your hands on the world's thinnest handset, March 18th is your lucky day, as Gionee just announced that the Elife S5.5 will be released on that date. As the name suggests, the phone is just 5.5 mm thick, beating everything else currently on the market, but the svelte design is not its only selling point. We will be getting a 5" 1080x1920 pixels Super AMOLED display, 1.7 GHz octacore MediaTek MT6592 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 13 MP rear camera, and a 5 MP frontal one, as well as a 2300 mAh battery. The battery capacity seems decent for such an anorexic phone, and Gionee claims that the Elife S5.5 will be able to get you through the working day on its juice alone. Unfortunately, Gionee didn't find the space for a microSD slot, so the fashion model will stay with the 16 GB of internal memory it houses.
The Elife S5.5 will launch in China next Tuesday, though Gionee promised it will roll out gradually to more than 40 countries as well, while there will be an LTE version, arriving in June. For now, you can get the 3G version of the handset, which will run you $374 - small potatoes to pay, if you want to brag with the possession of the "world's thinnest phone". We spent a brief hands-on time with the handset during the MWC expo last month, and found it to be truly an engineering marvel, though somewhat uncomfortable to handle, precisely on account of the trimmed waistline.

Moto X gets new college colors and a lower price in time for March Madness

When you've got Moto Maker, you don't always need accessories to show support for your favorite sports team. With March Madness only days away, Motorola has thrown nine new back colors and three new accents into its Moto X paint pot to create the "College Collection," a set pre-configured color combinations that'll match upwards of 40 school teams. It's no secret that Motorola's flagship is struggling to sell, so it's embarking on yet another price reduction, this time giving students the chance to snag an off-contract Moto X for just $339 (regular price $400) with a qualifying .edu email address. Incidentally, Motorola won't print your school's logo onto the back of your fresh Moto X, so you'll have to buy one of Uncommon's $35 clear cases instead -- because phones need lettermans too.

ASUS' pint-sized Chromebox ships on March 14th for $179

If the simplicity of ASUS' Chromebox is enticing, you'll be glad to hear that you can pick up the miniscule computer very soon. The $179 Chrome OS desktop is now available for pre-order at stores like Amazon, Newegg and TigerDirect, with the first wave of orders due to ship on March 14th. A base system starts out modestly with a 1.4GHz Celeron and 2GB of RAM, although you can splurge for a Core i3 model (the Core i7 variant isn't coming stateside). Just don't expect a completely silent machine -- AnandTech understands that none of the Chromeboxes are fanless, contrary to some expectations. As long that isn't a dealbreaker, though, you can snag ASUS' cheap PC at one of the source links.

March Madness Live app dribbles its way to Windows Phone 8 this year

This year, Windows Phone 8 users can watch all 67 NCAA men's basketball games too, now that the March Madness Live app has arrived (there's also a new app for Windows 8, if the browser doesn't cut it). The streaming app was previously available on iOS and Android only, and long ago, it even cost $10 a pop to download. Now the app is free, but any game aired on TNT, TBS or TruTV still requires a cable TV subscription for viewing. There is a brief preview period before users need to log in, and anyone can stream games aired on CBS.

As a bonus for cable subscribers, each semifinal round will have three different feeds that viewers can choose from: the game coverage itself and team-specific presentations. Other than these new features, the apps also got a new interface that make them more suitable for phone and tablet screens. The March Madness Live apps aren't exactly available yet, but as the name implies, they're slated to hit the App Store, Google Play and Windows Marketplaces sometime this March.

Qualcomm Will Elevate COO Steve Mollenkopf To CEO Role In March, So Hands Off, Microsoft

Qualcomm will replace current CEO Paul Jacobs with current COO Steve Mollenkopf starting on March 4, immediately following the company’s annual shareholder meeting. This announcement comes only seven and half hours after a report from Bloomberg suggested Microsoft was considering Mollenkopf for the CEO role at its own company.

Maybe Mollenkopf’s camp at Qualcomm leaked that report as the final push needed to convince the chip-maker to sign on the dotted line and retain him for their team, but whatever the circumstances behind the scenes, it seems very unlikely the two reports are coincidentally timed. Mollenkopf is just the latest executive to be snatched from Microsoft’s short list: Ford CEO Alan Mulally seems happy to stay where he is at least through next year, although a report from Thursday suggests the Ford board of directors wants some reassurance on that front.

Mollenkopf is likely in demand because he’s been a key player in helping Qualcomm rise to dominate the mobile industry. Mobile is an area where Microsoft has not done very well, which has led some to question its relevance given the general shift in computing, so Mollenkopf would make sense as a short list candidate to help Redmond right the ship.

Microsoft’s short list is dwindling, with some candidates reported falling out of favor with the company itself, including former Nokia boss Stephen Elop, and others like Mollenkopf being snatched from their grip. At this rate, Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise chief Satya Nadella, also a short-lister, might just get the nod by default.
