Nokia promises 'more Lumia' at April 2nd event

Windows Phone fans have more to look forward to this April than just the formal unveiling of Windows Phone 8.1 -- Nokia has sent out invitations for an April 2nd event in San Francisco that should deliver "more Lumia." The notice doesn't give any real hints as to what will be at the presentation. However, the event takes place on the first day of Microsoft's Build developer conference. Don't be shocked if Nokia unveils devices that need Windows Phone 8.1 to run, such as the rumored Lumia 630 (Moneypenny) and Lumia 930 (Martini). Peter Jackson promises improved high frame rate showing for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The first Hobbit movie served as a debut for 48fps "high frame rate" movies, and found a cool reception from critics and many fans. This time around, as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters, director Peter Jackson is doubling down on the rhetoric, claiming that an improved HFR is the best way to see the movie. Quoted by Variety, Jackson repeated claims that this new process improves the quality of 3D, and says he experimented with a different approach to color grading that takes away from the HD-ish look many disliked the first time around. The second Hobbit movie has HFR screenings at 812 screens, nearly double the last year's number. This time around press and critics saw the film in 24fps, instead of 48fps, but the various premieres did feature HFR showings. Samsung promises 'differentiated' smartphones based on its camera expertise

Samsung has instigated a small corporate reshuffle that could potentially have big implications for its future smartphones. The company has shunted its digital imaging unit sideways so that it sits under the giant umbrella of the mobile division, in the hope of combining "technical know-how" in these two areas and ultimately "differentiating" its smartphones with better camera technology. At the same time, Samsung expects expertise to flow in the opposite direction, allowing its engineers to create cameras with better wireless connectivity. It's a move that makes plenty of sense given the recent spate of Galaxy-branded hybridized products, such as the slightly awkward Galaxy S 4 Zoom and hugely over-priced Galaxy NX mirrorless shooter. It also suggests that Samsung has paid attention to what Nokia has achieved by re-thinking mobile camera technology for its PureView phones, instead of using standard off-the-shelf parts.
