Airbnb Is Testing Out An Affordable Cleaning Service For Hosts In San Francisco
Peer-to-peer lodgings marketplace Airbnb has been focused on finding ways that it can help its hosts improve the quality of experience for guests that stay in their homes. As part of this effort, the company is trialing a low-cost cleaning service for some hosts on the platform.
According to an email sent to a host in the San Francisco Bay Area that was forwarded to TechCrunch, Airbnb is piloting a program that will make cleaning services available to some people who make their homes available on the platform. The email claims those services will be “affordable, easy to schedule, and can be tailored to include amenities such as linen service and gift baskets.”
In a statement from an Airbnb spokesperson, the company confirmed the trial, saying: “We’re always testing ways to make the experience on Airbnb better. This is a test we’re looking at in one market.”
Airbnb is working on a number of ways in which it can better support the people who list their homes on the platform. It recently brought on a new head of hospitality, Chip Conley, and created a Hospitality Innovation Lab in Dublin aimed at determining best practices for hosts.
It’s also introduced a new suite of mobile apps that are aimed at making the listing process easier. At the same event in which those apps were unveiled, Airbnb announced that it would relaunch Airbnb Groups to enable hosts to communicate and share tips with each other, and even toyed with the idea of offering up smartphones to hosts as a way to improve response times to guests and boost overall bookings.
But chief among the ways that Airbnb hosts can improve the quality of stay for their guests is through cleanliness of the spaces that they list. Those who frequently have Airbnb guests already know this, and many so-called “super hosts” already schedule regular cleaning sessions between stays.
Doing so can be expensive, however, and can eat into the money that hosts make — especially those who rely on income from Airbnb to help them pay their rents. At $55 for a three-hour cleaning, the price is slightly below what you might get from a service like Homejoy, which generally charges $20 an hour (in San Francisco, at least). Individual cleaners can run even higher, depending on the size of the home or how much cleaning is needed.
Offering hosts a somewhat discount price is a nice perk, especially for those who regularly rent out their homes to other members of Airbnb. It also improves the overall quality of their stays, could lead to better reviews, and overall increase the likelihood that hosts will have future guests.

Zynga is testing Bitcoin payments for its Web games
Zynga has revealed that it is testing a partnership with Bitpay to accept Bitcoins for in-game purchases on some of its Web-based games.
I guess it’s only natural for you to use your virtual currency to purchase virtual goods. The Zynga crowd doesn’t really strike me as the type to amass Bitcoins, but there’s bound to be some overlap.
If you want to give it a try, the test is active on Zynga.com for FarmVille 2, CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, Hidden Chronicles, Hidden Shadows and CityVille.

Zynga begins testing Bitcoin payments for some online games
Zynga has begun accepting virtual currency Bitcoin as payment for virtual goods in some of its games.
The social-gaming company has partnered with Bitcoin payment processor BitPay to test the cryptocurrency in a handful of its Web-based games, Zynga announced late Friday in a Reddit post. Players of FarmVille 2, CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, Hidden Chronicles, Hidden Shadows, and CityVille will be able to use Bitcoin to make in-game purchases, according to the post, which was confirmed by CNET.
"In response to Bitcoin's rise in popularity around the world, Zynga, with help from BitPay, is testing expanded payment options for players to make in-game purchases using Bitcoin," the company said in its post. "We look forward to hearing from our players about the Bitcoin test so we can continue in our efforts to provide the best possible gaming experience."

While beating Wall Street estimates for its third-quarter earnings in October, Zynga recorded continuing declines in revenue and active user numbers.
Bitcoin has grown in acceptance in recent months, with some observers believing the digital currency could be the currency of the future. A Bank of America research report last month indicated that the decentralized currency could become a major contender to other types of online money-transfer providers.
However, the decentralized nature of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies has also raised concerns in the banking industry. The European Banking Authority in December warned against the buying, holding, or trading virtual currencies, noting that there are currently no regulations to protect consumers from financial losses in the event exchanges fail or go out of business.

Netflix is testing multiple new subscription plans, like 3 streams for $9.99
Netflix likes to run small tests of features and packages before it offers them widely (like its new unified UI), and that includes the "1 SD stream for $6.99" some have started seeing recently. Another offer currently in testing covers the hole between the standard $7.99/month offer that provides up to two simultaneous streams on one account and the $11.99 offer that goes up to 4 at once. Just like the 1 stream offer not everyone will see it and there's no way to know if it will ever become widely available, but a few will see a $9.99 option that provides 3 simultaneous streams.
Netflix has declined to push cable TV-style tiers and pricing packages, but the multiple tests seem to show how it's trying to find the sweet spot with what it offers. We also checked on a widely-reported reported list of movies that may leave streaming January 1st, but Netflix could not confirm which titles will actually go away, referring to the constant ebb and flow of titles on Watch Instantly. We'll be interested in seeing what's still available after the ball drops and what new options arrive (seasons 5 - 8 of Dexter and Jack Reacher are incoming, and original content like S2 of House of Cards isn't far off) but if you really need to watch Half Baked this wouldn't be a bad time to press play.

FAA selects six sites for drone testing because flying robots are our future
One day, drones will be flying overhead... and it will be normal. But, right now, concern over the safety of allowing unmanned aircraft to roam freely in our airspace outweighs their groovy future potential. Which is why the FAA today, following a mandate by Congress, has selected six test sites around the US for the purpose of studying UAS (unmanned aircraft) and eventually integrating them safely into our heavily trafficked skies. Research on UAS will now be carried out at facilities operated by The University of Alaska, Texas A&M University, the state of Nevada (an obvious choice, really), North Dakota's Department of Commerce, New York's Griffiss International Airport and Virginia Tech -- all chosen for their geographical and climatic diversity.
Each partner will carry out testing in key research areas highlighted by the FAA: sense and avoid, command and control, ground control station standards and human factors, airworthiness, lost link procedures and interface with air traffic control. The results of which will go towards developing regulations for "commercial and civil use" (yes, you will one day own and operate a drone). But just because the FAA's given a greenlight to further UAS testing, that doesn't mean you'll see drones whizzing about in our skies anytime soon. The agency's stressed that this is just a test and not an invitation to tempt fate in our national airspace system.

NASA underwater testing slimmer suits for spacewalking on asteroids (video)
In a tank of water in Texas, NASA's busily testing its wardrobe for a future Armageddon-esque mission. The space agency has been taking advantage of its Neutral Buoyancy Lab near the Johnson Space Center in Houston to run a some new space suits through the wringer. The suits are a modified version of the pumpkin-colored launch and reentry Advanced Crew Escape System (ACES) that NASA started employing back in 1994. The tweaked versions are said to be less bulky to better fit within the spacial constraints of the Orion spacecraft and more flexible for walks on deep space missions, including journeys to relocated asteroids. Zauba � an organization handling the import of tech into India � has listed 43 units of the Nokia RM-977 as being brought in from Finland for "intercompany use for testing and evaluation purposes only".
The details on the device are scarce, but the screen size is known � 4.5". That's the same size as the Lumia 92x handsets, and a bit smaller than the 4.7" Lumia 625.
The price of the device is listed as INR 8,000 ($130). That's the same price as a Lumia 520, but much cheaper than the INR 15,000 ($245) price for the Lumia 625. So, what is it? The info on the site says it's a single-SIM device, so that rules out a dual-SIM Asha (those are under INR 5,000 anyway).
Update: The site actually lists two versions with the same model number. The second version is marked "dual-SIM". Is this the Nokia Moneypenny?
Is it a Lumia 520's equivalent of the 625 � same specs, bigger screen? We won't know until it's official or at least until someone leaks it.

Zauba is at it again � this time the Indian import tracking site leaked a Nokia device with a 5.2" screen and the model number RM-964. The device is once again being imported for testing.
Unlike the 4.5" Nokia RM-977, the RM-964 is an expensive device costing INR 34,524 ($563/�410). It's a single-SIM only too, there's no mention of a dual-SIM version. So, it's clearly a Lumia of some kind (Asha devices are around INR 5,000), but what could it be?
A quick check reveals an old rumor for a 5.2" Nokia device, allegedly Lumia 825, that leaked in August. The specs for the handset listed 720p screen resolution, Snapdragon 400 chipset (quad-core processor, Adreno 305) and Windows Phone OS (but unfortunately, no model number).
The listed price seems a bit steep for those specs, but that's just the declared price for an R&D device and doesn�t necessarily reflect the real retail cost.
By the way, Nokia allegedly has a 5" powerhouse in the works too, the Lumia 929. With a 1080p screen and Snapdragon 800 chipset it will target flagship Androids, while the Nokia RM-964 Lumia 825 will face the mid-rangers.
