Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB variant to be launched in India on February 24 for Rs. 23,999

Xiaomi has announced that it would launch the 64GB variant of the device on February 24. As per the company’s official announcement through its official Facebook Page, the Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB would be priced at Rs. 23,999 in India.

When Xiaomi first announced the price of the 16GB variant of the Mi 4, there was a bit of disappointment among Indian consumers, as it was priced just Rs. 2,000 below the OnePlus One

, and lacked a microSD card slot. Many of my friends and colleagues preferred OnePlus One over the Mi 4 for this exact reason, since the OnePlus One comes with 64GB inbuilt storage.

It remains to be seen how consumers would react to Mi 4 64GB variant’s pricing, as it is around Rs. 2,000 costlier than the OnePlus One, which essentially offers similar hardware specifications, and comes with Cyanogen OS 11S. Teasers confirm 5.5 inch Xiaomi Red Rice Note phone to be unveiled Sunday

On Thursday, we told you that an apparent sequel to the Xiaomi Redmi (aka Red Rice) had been spotted receiving TENNA certification in China. TENNA is China's equivalent to the FCC in the states. Now, a trio of teasers produced by Xiaomi reveal that the Chinese manufacturer will be unveiling the new device on Sunday.

The TENNA certification indicates that the new Xiaomi Redmi model will be called the Redmi Note and feature a 5.5 inch screen with 720 x 1280 resolution. The certification leads us to expect two models. One will have an octa-core 1.4GHz processor, and the other features an octa-core 1.7GHz CPU. Both variants could end up sporting the MT6592 true octa-core chip from MediaTek.

Xiaomi shook up the Chinese market last year by offering the Hongmi (aka Red Rice) for a price of $130 USD. For that price, buyers received a device offering a 4.7 inch glass with a MediaTek quad-core CPU driving the phone, and 1GB of RAM inside. As you might expect, at that price, the phone became quite popular. Last month, an international version called the Xiaomi Redmi was introduced in Singapore, where it got off to a great start.

Xiaomi confirms 5.5-inch, octa-core Redmi Note phone with teaser

The leaked Redmi phone we saw a couple of days ago is coming sooner than we expected, and it now bears an interesting name: Redmi Note. Does it mean we'll be getting a stylus with this Chinese phone? No idea, as Xiaomi's midnight teaser -- pictured above -- doesn't reveal much, other than confirming the 5.5-inch screen (the leak indicates a 720p resolution) and the octa-core processor (1.4GHz or 1.7GHz). What's missing is the unsubsidized price, but it should sit somewhere between the current Redmi's CN¥699 (about $110) and the MI2a's CN¥1,499 ($240) -- so maybe CN¥999 ($160) at most. Folks in China will be able to pre-order at local time 8pm on March 19th using Tencent's Qzone app, which got the exclusive for the Redmi Note's debut sale. For those outside China, your usual gray market channels are standing by.

Xiaomi launches MIUI for tablets, new Nexus 7 gets first dibs

While Xiaomi has yet to launch its very own tablet (the Eden Tab doesn't count), you can now get a first taste of its tablet-friendly MIUI Android ROM, which is available as an open beta for the 2013 edition Nexus 7. According to the company, this isn't merely a scaled up version of MIUI V5, as it has a "brand new architecture" with content -- including native apps, system menus and new screen animations -- optimized for both screen orientations. Interestingly, CEO Lei Jun added that tablet vendors can get in touch if they want to ship their devices with MIUI preloaded, which would be a first for non-Xiaomi hardware. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean Lei's not making his own tablets in the near future; but as of now, there are no reliable rumors of such plan.

Huawei's Honor brand challenges Xiaomi with 3X and 3C low-cost phones

Huawei's known for its Ascend smartphones around the world, but back in late 2011, the company also started toying with a small Honor series for select budget markets. Fast forward to today, the latter sub-brand has become Huawei's platform to compete with the sudden surge of affordable online brands in China -- most notably Xiaomi, the pioneer of that industry. With a little help from MediaTek (and ironically not Huawei's own HiSilicon), the phone maker is upping its firepower over this territory with two new dual-SIM devices: Honor 3X and Honor 3C.

The Honor 3X joins the first wave of octa-core 1.7GHz MT6592-powered devices, and it boasts 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel f/2.2 main camera, a 5-megapixel 1.4-micron front imager plus a generous 3,000mAh battery. The 720p resolution on the glove-friendly, 5.5-inch IPS touchscreen may seem like a let-down, but in this case, Huawei reasoned that going 1080p would push power consumption up by as much as 20 percent, plus many folks may not notice the visual difference -- a point that Huawei Device Chairman Richard Yu has often echoed publicly.

On a brighter note, the 3X is the first phone to feature dual-3G SIM slots -- one Mini SIM and one Micro SIM -- for WCDMA (China Unicom and most carriers around the world) and TD-SCDMA (China Mobile). Better yet, both slots will recognize either type of 3G radio, as opposed to having designated slots for each. There's also a dual-mic system for in-call noise cancellation, as well as DTS audio support. The price? From just CN¥1,698 or about $280 off-contract, making it a tad more affordable than the Xiaomi MI3. Alas, there's no launch date just yet.
