Verizon now sells the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, offers Google's Nexus 7 2013 for $49.99 on contract

Verizon today launched the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition - which, despite what its name suggests, is a tablet that’s been available from other locations since October last year. We knew that this would eventually come to Verizon.

Verizon is offering the Note 10.1 2014 for $699.99 off contract, and for $599.99 to customers willing to sign a new 2-year contract agreement. Although it's not the newest tablet around, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 remains a high-end offering. Its features include a 10.1-inch display with 2560 x 1600 pixels, S Pen Stylus, LTE connectivity, 8MP rear camera, 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, and a 8,220 mAh battery.
The Note 10.1 is the second Samsung-made tablet released by Verizon this year. Earlier this month, the carrier launched the newer, bigger and arguably better Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, which costs $749.99 on contract, or $849.99 outright. Yes, we know, these on contract prices are ridiculously high.

In related news, Verizon has cut the price of its Nexus 7 2013 from $249.99 on contract to just $49.99. As you may know, the carrier started selling the Nexus 7 with LTE last month.

Xiaomi launches MIUI for tablets, new Nexus 7 gets first dibs

While Xiaomi has yet to launch its very own tablet (the Eden Tab doesn't count), you can now get a first taste of its tablet-friendly MIUI Android ROM, which is available as an open beta for the 2013 edition Nexus 7. According to the company, this isn't merely a scaled up version of MIUI V5, as it has a "brand new architecture" with content -- including native apps, system menus and new screen animations -- optimized for both screen orientations. Interestingly, CEO Lei Jun added that tablet vendors can get in touch if they want to ship their devices with MIUI preloaded, which would be a first for non-Xiaomi hardware. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean Lei's not making his own tablets in the near future; but as of now, there are no reliable rumors of such plan.

Huawei's new high-resolution tablet may give the Nexus 7 a run for its money

There isn't much choice among 7-inch Android tablets with high-resolution screens -- the Nexus 7 is frequently the only practical option. However, it's about to get a proper challenger. China's TENAA has certified the Huawei MediaPad X1 7.0, a small slate with a 1,920 x 1,200 display. It's not clear that the X1's 1.6GHz quad-core Hisilicon processor will outperform the Snapdragon S4 Pro inside the Nexus, but the device will be a featherweight at just 8.4 ounces and 0.3 inch thick. There's also 3G inside. About the only clear setback is the use of Android 4.2 -- where's KitKat, Huawei? The company hasn't said when it might reveal the new MediaPad, but certification raises the possibility of an announcement in the near future.

Google starts rolling out Android 4.4.2 to Nexus devices

Shortly after the 4.4.1 update, Google has now started rolling out the 4.4.2 update for the Nexus devices. Whereas the previous update focused on improving the camera performance on the Nexus 5, the latest one merely includes bug fixes.

There is no official change log from Google but according to Sprint, the following changes have been made:

Fix for clearing the VM IndicatorFix for delivery of the VM IndicatorVarious additional software fixesSecurity enhancements

The update is rolling out to the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013 models) and the Nexus 10. If you didn't get the 4.4.1 update it's fine as you can directly install the 4.4.2 update as soon as it is available for you.

- reader commentssaramongllaUpdates are essentially done in batches, so pressing the �Check for Updates� button over and over really isn�t going to affect when you get that update much.

Reply2013-12-11 17:08PA@JeDWIN884.4.2 isn't much of an improvement for Nexus 4 users anyways. Its mostly aimed at improving Nexus 5's cam performance.
