OnePlus confirms April 23rd launch date for its first smartphone

One One may occupy all of today's headlines, but there's another One that wants some of your attention. OnePlus, the outfit founded by former Oppo VP Pete Lau, has announced that it'll whip the covers from its "perfect" Android smartphone on April 23rd. Even at this late stage, however, the company is tweaking the spec list for the device -- swapping in a Snapdragon 801 for just a little bit extra power. Naturally, we'll be at the shindig, and will share our impressions as soon as we get our hands on one.

HTC took to social media to tease its latest smartphone, the "all new" HTC One.

In a season full of phone launches, HTC hopes its new One device will stand above the rest.

The company will unveil the successor to last year's HTC One, rumored to be named the HTC One M8, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT at a press event in New York.

There's a lot riding on HTC's new flagship phone, with the company's profits and sales continuing to fall. While the HTC One was well regarded and won critical praise for its all-metal design, it got overshadowed by the marketing blitz of Samsung's Galaxy S4. HTC has a lot of work ahead to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again this year with its new device and the Galaxy S5.

A lot of details have already leaked about HTC's new phone. It's believed to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 or 805 processor, and a larger, 5-inch screen. The device also could come with a full 3GB of RAM to make it even faster.

The camera also should get an update, including possibly twin camera lenses. And HTC may also update its Sense UI skin that layers on top of Android with motion gesture controls and a cleaner interface with flatter icons.

CNET will bring you full coverage from the event.

AngelList Grabs Philipp Moehring From Seedcamp To Launch Syndicates In Europe

Startup fund-raising and hiring tool AngelList has swooped into Europe and hired one of the eco-system’s most respected players. Philipp Moehring, who as a long-time associate at the Seedcamp accelerator and won acclaim as a level-headed players (nominated as Best Mentor at The Europas Awards), has been hired by AngelList founder Naval Ravikant to spearhead the company’s push into Europe. Moehring will now lead the process of AngelList eventually launching its ‘Syndicate’ product (which allows startups to syndicate funding rounds) across Europe, as well as its ‘Talent’ product which is geared towards startups hiring.

While the move is a blow to Seedcamp, having an old friend over at AngelList is not going to hurt them one bit, and AngelList is in no way competitive – indeed Seedcamp already uses the platform to filter startup applications to their programme. Moehring will be based in Berlin but will be travelling to London and San Francisco very regularly.

He said that the company last night posted an FAQ on who it will operate in Europe.

This explains that startups will be able to use AngelList in Europe but some products are not yet available due to regulatory reasons. The well-known features (contacting other users on the platform, hiring talent etc) are all fine, but only companies with a Delaware based C-corp can use it to raise money and only from US investors, not Europeans. This is until AngelList has been through the regulatory process in each relevant jurisdiction across Europe – which will clearly take some time.

Likewise, European investors still cannot run an AngelList syndicate yet, though they will eventually be able to. AngelList does not currently market to European investors.

That said, it’s my hunch that the UK – where many European startups are formally HQ’d – will be the first jurisdiction.

Moehring said AngelList has already helped startups hire over 200 people in Europe via the platform, which remains free for European startups to use at the moment.

Of course, it’s the Syndicates product which has made the most waves in the US – leading to some investors like Jason Calacanis and Kevin Rose flexing the full weight of their pulling power to attract other co-investors in the market. But we will have to wait for AngelList to pick its way through Europe’s fragmented market place before that is launched.

“We are figuring it out jurisdiction by jurisdiction,” Moehring told me.

“I’m personally interested in making things easier for startups, and Angelist does that. Getting investment for a startup is a black box, and still so much of it is unknown to many new founders – so breaking that open is going to be a good thing,” he said.

AngelList’s business model is based on the fact that it takes 5% of the ‘carry’ – the upside cash when a startup is acquired or has a liquidity event. Additionally its Talent product is a paid-for service in the US. Right now it’s free in Europe.

It cannot be underestimated the impact this will have in Europe. The fact that AngelList – used extensively in the US by almost all startups – will have someone of Moehring’s calibre shepherding their operations in the region is likely to have a highly positive and far-reaching ramifications for startups in Europe, who typically have to rely on much small levels of funding. AngelList’s virtual nature could speed up the funding process to make it far easier to raise money, and put them on a more equal footing with US startups.

Microsoft reportedly talking to Sony about Windows Phone launch in 2014

Microsoft only has a few key Windows Phone partners under its belt, but it may be expanding the ecosystem very shortly -- The Information hears from sources that Redmond is once again in talks to launch a Sony-made Windows Phone. While there's no guarantee of a deal, the partnership could introduce a handset as soon as mid-2014. The device may even carry the VAIO badge, and it could serve as a vehicle for Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services. Even if the discussions fall apart, Microsoft may have more hardware manufacturers lined up. Tipsters claim that the company wants to renew ZTE's interest in Windows Phone, and it could be willing to cut or even waive the OS licensing fees that frequently drive potential allies toward Android. Neither side has confirmed the talks, and Sony will only say that it "continues to assess" Windows when it's relevant. Still, there's now a chance that the Xperia X2 will finally get a sequel.

Backed By Steve Blank & More, Startup Genome Founders Launch Next-Gen Benchmarking Tool For Startups

Three years ago, a team of researchers, entrepreneurs and data geeks set out on an ambitious mission: To put the world’s technology startups under the microscope in an effort to better understand why some succeed and why 90 percent eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

Fast forward to today, and The Startup Genome (as it’s now called) has analyzed data from over 100,000 startups around the globe and has conducted hundreds of in-depth, qualitative interviews with entrepreneurs and investors. The results provide an exciting look into not only what characteristics and qualities make for a successful formula, but how different startup ecosystems stack up with each other.

The team behind the project has also begun to leverage its unique data sets to create a benchmarking tool to enable entrepreneurs to evaluate their progress compared to their peers and help them make more informed product and business decisions. This month, after more than a year of testing and tweaking, the team finally released Compass into the wild.

Compared to prior iterations, Compass founder and CEO Bjoern Herrmann (who is also one of the co-founders of The Startup Genome Project) tells us, the now fully-baked startup benchmarking tool offers automated data collection from a host of tools and services popular among SMBs, including services like Salesforce.com, MailChimp, Google Analytics, Mixpanel, PayPal, Quickbooks and Stripe.

Using data derived from the sources, Compass then funnels your startup’s business metrics into its revamped dashboard, allowing them to view company benchmarks across a range of categories, configure an alert system to stay up to date on company revenue, churn rate, user growth rate, acquisition costs and so on, while offering visualizations of that data in correlation charts, graphs and via tailored, supplemental analysis.

But the real key to the new Compass product, Herrmann says, its the new dynamic system its team developed to generate benchmarks based on large data sets. Up until today, most benchmarking solutions have relied on 50-year-old methodologies to collect and analyze data, so, the team has instead developed a methodology designed specifically for Big Data analysis.

WSJ: Facebook's autoplaying video ads launch this week

After months of rumors, the Wall Street Journal claims Facebook will finally include video ads in user's feeds on the web and mobile devices later this week -- a move we figured would happen soon now that it's splashed other autoplaying videos all over the place. Citing "people familiar with the matter," the Journal claims Facebook will announce the change later today, with the first ads rolling out on Thursday. Previous rumors have put the run time for ads at 15 seconds or so -- a fit for Instagram video -- and this rumor even says movie studio Lions Gate will be among the first using it, pushing mini trailers for its upcoming movie Divergent.

So, why is Facebook reportedly tossing in one more thing for you to quickly scroll past? Because it can charge advertisers much more for video ads, which will play whether or not users click on them (like user videos, they're silent unless clicked), letting it grab some of the money usually marked for TV campaigns. Previous rumors claimed the hold up in bringing video ads to the social network is because they loaded too slowly, so it would appear that hurdle has been cleared -- we'll see if load times are enough to keep users from running to other services once their feed looks like a sponsored version of Vine.

Microsoft set to launch original programming for Xbox One in early 2014

Microsoft hopes its first wave of original TV programming for Xbox One will be out in early 2014, the company's president of entertainment and digital, Nancy Tellem, tells Variety. At the latest, Redmond is hoping to have its original content out by the second quarter. She admits the initiative has taken longer than expected, due in part to a lack of a prescribed business model like that of Amazon or Netflix. Hollywood deals are also hard to come by due to a fully formed strategy. The goal isn't to redefine the TV viewing experience, she tells Variety, it's it's to evolve it. Her division is in the process of securing exclusives and trying to figure out whether the content is "best on Xbox or only on Xbox" when it comes to interactive functionality. Whether the first round of shows includes the previously-announced Spielberg-produced Halo series or something involving street soccer remains to be seen, but from the sounds of it, it won't be long until we find out.

Tellem says Microsoft is keeping millenials in mind when it comes to how programming is consumed, whether it's through multitasking or on-demand content that's available whenever someone has the time to watch. If Microsoft's original programming model with Xbox Video sounds familiar, that's because the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are all leading the charge on their own streaming services. For more from Tellem, be sure to check out Variety's piece.

Amazon tipped to launch online wholesale store called Pantry in 2014

While Amazon has no shortage of rivals, it's now reportedly gearing up to take on big players in the warehouse store business, like Costco. According to USA Today's anonymous sources, Amazon is prepping the launch of an online service called Pantry that'll initially carry around 2,000 common grocery items to be sold at low cost. As long as you're an Amazon Prime member, you'll be able to fill a box up with Pantry goods that the retailer will ship for a nominal fee, assuming you're within the weight limit. Amazon hasn't commented on the report, so while there's no firm word on when you can start shopping in your bathrobe for month-long supplies of canned goods, sources say it'll be sometime in 2014.

Sprint to launch Galaxy S 4 variant with speedy Spark LTE

Sprint already has a few devices that support its extra-fast Spark data service, but one of its hottest smartphones -- Samsung's Galaxy S 4 -- has been "stuck" with ordinary LTE. That won't be a problem for much longer, as the carrier has revealed a Spark-capable version of the Android flagship. The upgrade won't do much more than introduce support for the tri-band wireless technology, but we doubt that owners will complain when they're downloading at a brisk 50-60Mbps. They may balk at the price, though. While the regular GS4 currently sells for $100 on contract, Sprint will offer a 16GB Spark edition for $200 when it ships in the next few weeks -- you'll have to really, really want that extra bandwidth (and live in a Spark area) to justify the premium.
