Opera's iPad browser loses navigation buttons, gains lockscreen music controls

Since its launch in September, Opera's iPad-centric browser Coast has struggled to remain as visible as some of its more popular mobile apps. In an attempt to breathe some life into the app, the company today dropped a new update that introduces a number of new customization, navigation and media features that set it apart from Apple and Google's browser offerings. In version 2.0, Opera has ditched the familiar forward and back buttons in favor of the gestures it supported at launch, so expect your swiping finger to get more of a workout. The app now lets you set wallpapers using images from your Photo Roll and gives you the option to select which apps to open PDF files in, whether it be iBooks, Dropbox or another PDF-compatible app. Coast now also features its own media player, which is capable of handling music playback from the iPad lockscreen. The new update is said to make browsing speedier and more secure than before -- very helpful if you need to make a quick escape from some of the nastier corners of the internet.

Physical buttons make a comeback in Samsung's low-end Galaxy Core Advance

The rugged Galaxy S 4 Active had them, and so did the lesser-known Xcover2. But all-physical navigation buttons are becoming rarer on Samsung phones nowadays, and that's why our eyes were drawn to the manufacturer's latest low-end offering, the Galaxy Core Advance. In addition to the obvious trio on the front, the handset also finds room for dedicated camera and voice recorder buttons on the side. Specs-wise, however, we're still in deeply unexciting Galaxy Core territory, with Android 4.2 and TouchWiz running on a 480 x 800 display (now slightly bigger at 4.7 inches), a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage (expandable via MicroSD) and Europe-friendly 3G data bands. The phone will be out early next year, although we're not sure exactly where it'll be sold or for how much. What we can say, though, is that Samsung will have to drastically undercut the superior Moto G (which has a 720p display and Android 4.3) if it plans to go up against Motorola in the same markets.

Windows Phone 8.1 Blue update to add on-screen nav buttons

On his Twitter account, renowned leakster @evleaks has shared a part of a screenshot from Windows Phone 8.1, which shows on-screen touch navigation buttons. Currently, the three-button combo of Back, Windows and Search keys aren't part of the user interface, like they have been on many Androids since Ice Cream Sandwich, but below the screen in either hardware or capacitive touch flavors.

evleaks' tweet suggests Microsoft is going to change that and will either go for software navigation keys or diversify the portfolio of Windows Phone devices giving OEMs the choice between hardware and virtual buttons.

Other Windows Phone 8.1 rumors suggest we're in for a notification center, enhanced multi-tasking and a Siri-like voice assistant.

We suspect Microsoft will official unveil its upcoming WP 8.1 OS at their Build developer conference in April, 2014.
