Microsoft confirms Windows Phone 10 update for low-end Lumia phones

One of the most determined project of Microsoft this year is now witnessing few contours of an official plan. Vice President of Microsoft Operating Systems Group, Joe Belfiore, tweeted to confirm that Windows 10 update for phones will also be rolled out to 512MB RAM Lumia devices. However, few features might be different from the original design depending on the phones, and the roll out might also be variable in nature to many phones. It means that some Lumia phones might not be able to utilize all the features of the updated OS owing to hardware constraints.

While speaking about the Technical Preview build of Windows Phone 10, Belfiore said, “It will be made available to Microsoft Insiders by this month. Also, we’re on track for Insider build coming in February as Terry said at our 1/21 event. We need to complete internal testing first, hang in!” he elaborated. Although, no specific timeline was revealed for the preview to be rolled out to the members.

Belfiore stated that only few phones in the series will be receiving the preview build of Windows Phone 10 whenever it is released to the Windows Insiders. He also confirmed that the Nokia Lumia 520 will support the preview build, but did not reveal that what other handsets are going to support the preview build. The Lumia 520 is one of the most popular Windows Phone device, as it has a market share of around one-third of all the Windows Phones combined.

The screenshot leaks of the Technical Preview build unleashed many new features. The leak has revealed a new interface, which can match the desktop and tablet version, along with an advanced recording app, a redesigned Alarms app, a well detailed Setting menu.

Bell says KitKat update coming by Monday to its Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Are you a Bell customer in Canada, toting a Samsung Galaxy Note 3? If so, we have some news that should put a smile on your face. A tweet from the Canadian carrier reveals that the Bell branded version of the Samsung phablet will be receiving the Android 4.4.2 update "by Monday." Bell didn't mention which Monday they were referring to, but we have a sneaking suspicion that the mobile operator means that the device will be updated by this coming Monday at the latest. Those Bell subscribers with the Samsung Galaxy S4 have just received the Android 4.4.2 update on Thursday.

Meanwhile, over at Bell's rival Rogers, the carrier has updated its website to show that its version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will receive its chocolatey update in late March. This is somewhat of a disappointment to Rogers' customers since an earlier road map from last month had this particular update listed as "coming soon."

Update to Google Wallet will allow you to track your online orders

An update to both the Android version and iOS version of Google Wallet, is adding a new feature that could be quite helpful. Called "Orders," the feature allows you to track online orders, receive a notification when they are shipped, and also keeps track of your past orders. The update is available only in the U.S. for Android users with Android 4.0 or higher, and iOS users running iOS 6.0 or higher.

Android users with Android 4.1 or higher have been able to track packages using Google Now, which receives the information from their email and shows them the status of any online orders on a card. Besides offering users the ability to tap and pay at participating retail outlets, Google Wallet will also keep track of any loyalty programs that users have signed up for.

The app can also track a user's location to promote special offers available at nearby retailers. Those that don't want Google Wallet to have their current location can merely disable the feature.

iOS Update Reportedly Includes New Capability For iAd Attribution

As part of iOS 7.1, the recent update to its mobile operating system, Apple appears to have added a new feature to its iAd program. This should allow the company to take credit for the app downloads driven by its ads, and allow advertisers to get a better sense of whether campaigns are paying off.

In a company blog post, mobile ad attribution startup HasOffers says there’s no mention of these changes in Apple’s documentation, but there is API code that seems to indicate a change. Here’s how HasOffers interprets the code:

Based on our interpretation, we believe this method will provide insight into whether a user engaged (impression or click) with an ad from iAd, in specific, prior to installing the app. If the user did engage with an ad specifically from iAd, then the “determine App Installation Attribution with Completion Handler” method will return a value of 1 for yes. If the user didn’t engage with an ad from iAd (perhaps the user engaged with an ad from another channel like Google Adwords or didn’t even engage with any ads at all), then the function will return a value of 0 for no.

I’ll spare you my attempt to squint at the code and tell you whether HasOffers’ interpretation is plausible. Instead, let me point out that through its MobileAppTracking product, HasOffers is a leader in mobile ad attribution (though it has also run afoul of Facebook), so this is an area where I’d trust their interpretation.

I’ve reached out to Apple and other companies that work on mobile attribution, and I’ll update this post if any of them get back to me.

Windows 8.1 update said to arrive when XP ends

April 8 is the day support for XP ends. Though it may be cold comfort for XP users, it may also be the day that Microsoft updates Windows 8.1.

Early April is shaping up to be a watershed of sorts for Windows users. At the same time that support for Windows XP is ending, the Windows 8.1 update is arriving to the general public, according to Neowin, citing a tweet from Supersite for Windows.

That date was also suggested earlier this month.

And April 8 is also the day for Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday," when it releases updates and fixes for a variety of Windows products.

But getting back to the Windows 8.1 update. A week before April 8, on April 2, MSDN users may be able to get the update, according to the same report.

Microsoft Vice President Joe Belfiore said at Mobile World Congress this week that the company wants to "make things better" for users without touchscreens.

Those changes may include new right-clickable context-sensitive menus, the ability to pin Metro apps to the Desktop task bar, and adding dedicated search and power buttons to the Start screen, as described earlier this month by ZDNet.

Meanwhile, the countdown for the end of support for XP continues. "There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system," as Microsoft has made amply clear.

Instapaper's already broad device support has just grown a little bit broader. The service's updated iOS app lets you send articles to Kindle for reading on one of Amazon's devices, and you can push videos to your big-screen TV through AirPlay. Even if you're happy with catching up from your iPad or iPhone, you may also like a new option to auto-renew your Instapaper subscription. It's not the most life-changing Instapaper update we've seen. Stay tuned, though -- the developers promise that their next release will be the biggest since Betaworks acquired the app last year.

Xbox One update preview adds new audio, Kinect options and a fix for UK TV

Xbox One owners who received a special ticket in their inbox are already testing out next month's update, and they've already uncovered a slew of tweaks. Beyond the multiplayer / party system changes and Twitch streaming we'd heard about, fans with surround sound headphones have been pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Dolby Digital Audio. Another new audio choice is bitstream output, and our friends at The Digital Media Zone have already checked it out to confirm the expected lights are popping up on their surround sound receivers.

Forum posters on NeoGAF has put together a list of changes they've as well, and several media related ones stick out. First, the 50Hz compatibility problem that plagued some European TV viewers using the HDMI passthrough has been fixed. Other tweaks include a check box to disable Kinect hand gestures while watching a video (which would often accidentally recognize casual movements and put an icon on the screen), and the ability to change how much the volume changes when commanded by Kinect. Windows 8.1 update may speed up budget tablets

We may not have to wait long to get that Windows 8.1 interface tweak, after all. ZDNet hears from sources that Microsoft wants to release the upgrade, tentatively named Update 1, on March 11th. The patch may let you do more than pin Windows Store apps, too: Redmond's developers will reportedly be able to optimize Windows' memory and storage footprints for lower-end tablets. ZDNet also reports that the software will be more business-friendly, though it's unclear how. We wouldn't be surprised if the launch details change, but it would certainly be nice to get a significant Windows refresh at the same time that we're picking up Titanfall.

Nest Says Shut-Off Heat Not Its Fault, But Pushes Thermostat Update To Fix 4.0 Problems

Nest is now rolling out a 4.0.1 update to its smart thermostat after last month’s faulty 4.0 firmware caused Wi-Fi and battery issues. However, it tells me the 4.0 bugs are not responsible for turning people’s heat off or down in the dead of winter. Instead, it says incompatible furnaces and people forgetting to change their air filters are to blame.

This paints a much rosier picture than if you check out Nest’s Facebook wall or run a Twitter search on it.

LG makes Knock a standard feature, update coming for L Series II models

LG first rolled out its Knock feature on the G2 earlier this year, but now that item will become a standard feature on future handsets. If you'll recall, the power button on that smartphone is situated around back, so Knock allows users to turn the unit on by double tapping on the screen. In addition to those upcoming devices, the outfit will add Knock to existing L Series II gadgets via a maintenance release update starting next month. Of course, specific availability will depend on region and carrier, so you might have to wait a bit longer for the add-on.

Google Glass XE 12 update lets you wink to capture photos, adds new Hangouts and YouTube glassware

MyGlass for iOS isn't the only big news to come out of Google's Glass camp today. Turns out, the company's issuing a major update, dubbed XE 12, for the intelligent eyewear that not only makes the complete Glass-to-iOS bridge possible, but also bundles in a few other bells, whistles and, yes, winks.

Let's start there, shall we? Before today, the only way to take a photo with a wink was by way of a third-party app. But now, Google's baked that functionality directly into the Explorer Edition of Glass, making those sly creepster shots even easier. Glassware's also getting a major boost with the addition of Hangouts, for those of you that want to send SMS, chats or even video calls from your head, and YouTube for simple Glass video uploads. Apart from that significant feature boost, the Glassware for Google Play Music now offers explorers the ability to navigate by playlists or, if they're All Access subscribers, radio stations.

XE 12 brings some much needed security along with it, too, giving Explorers the option to set a screen lock that turns on when you take Glass off or deactivate it. And because shooting off messages with the obnoxious "Sent Through Glass" was a little too... obnoxious, Google's cut that outgoing signature from SMS, though it'll still be present on all outgoing emails. Know what else is getting the axe? Guest Mode. According to Google, the feature was just too much of a strain for its devs to maintain, so if you want to impress with Glass, just hand'em over freely or take Google's advice and create a demo account.

And finally, because Google likes to be cute, you can now ask Glass for helpful caloric counts or even "How far to Brooklyn?" (the answer: No Sleep Til Brooklyn) -- because everyone, even Google, loves the Beastie Boys.

Netflix for Android update brings support for individual profiles and queues, better search

Netflix rolled out support for multiple individual streaming profiles within a single account a few months ago, but until now its Android app has been among the platforms that still didn't recognize them. The new version 3.1.0 update rolling out tonight changes that, finally letting people filter out queues and suggestions from others using the same account like family members, significant others or annoying roommates. In our use it doesn't pop up the profile switcher by default, but it's accessible after selecting the current profile under the slide-out menu from the left (shown after the break). According to the changelog this new version also brings an enhanced search, with support for people and related titles. The latest version of the app should be available on Google Play now, but you'll still have to hit YouTube for the latest House of Cards trailer.

Apple iOS 7 beta update hints at upcoming 'car display' feature

Apple on Friday released a second version of its iOS 7.1 beta to registered developers. It's an incremental update that fixes some bugs and moves some things around. For example, TouchID and passcode settings are displayed more prominently.

But one nugget worth noting is a setting in the "restrictions" menu that lets a user turn the "Car Display" on and off. The addition of the toggle setting suggests that Apple may release its "iOS in the Car" feature sooner rather than later. The car integration feature, according to 9to5Mac, will let users attach an iOS device to a car's console and provide an interface that lets them control things like music, messages, and maps right through the vehicle.

Sources also told 9to5Mac that there were other references to "iOS in the Car" elsewhere in the new beta update, and in the first iOS 7.1 beta update, released to developers last month. Apple's car integration launch could of course be pushed back, but it looks like the goal is to take the wraps off alongside the wide rollout of iOS 7.1.

Moto X Touchless Control update lets you speak your unlock code

You no longer have to give up some of the Moto X's voice commands if you want to rely on security codes. An update to the smartphone's Touchless Control app lets you speak a PIN code to unlock the device; as long as you're not worried about eavesdroppers, you can check private messages without poking at the screen. You won't even have to unlock the phone as often as before, since the upgrade expands the range of Google Now voice instructions that work while the handset is sleeping. You'll need to be running Android 4.4 KitKat on your Moto X to use the improved Touchless Control, but it's otherwise ready to download through Google Play.

Google says Android app permission manager was released by mistake, removes it from latest update

Remember that "Apps Ops" feature Google snuck into Android 4.3? The company seems to have changed its mind. The feature was originally hidden, but when activated with a third party app it gave users the ability to pick and choose what data apps have access to -- blocking seemingly harmless flashlight apps from accessing your call history, GPS data or address book. Now, users upgrading to Android 4.4.2 are reporting that the permission management tool has disappeared. According to Google, the feature was deployed by mistake; it wasn't ready for consumers yet. Continuing to use the incomplete feature could reportedly generate errors in certain apps. It sounds reasonable, considering that the user had to download special software to activate the feature in the first place, but it's always disappointing when updating removes features, rather than improves them. Hopefully, a complete and public version of App Ops will be available soon.
